Brazilian ship’s captain fined for spilling oil in Singapore

by The Associated Press

The captain of a Brazil-registered ship was fined April 5 for polluting the sea by spilling 26 gallons of fuel oil in Singapore waters, a news report said.

Farias Jose Gomes, a Brazilian, pleaded guilty to causing pollution and was given a choice of paying a fine of 10,000 Singapore dollars (dlrs 5,882) or spending two months in jail, the Television Corp. of Singapore news said.

It did not specify which option Gomes chose.

The spill occurred last year when Gomes’ vessel, the Norsul Amazonas, was carrying out an internal transfer of oil while berthed at Singapore’s Sembawang Terminal.
