Unocal records two new deepwater discoveries in Indonesia Company reports successful gas exploration wells offshore East Kalimantan with resource estimated at 2-3 trillion cubic feet Petroleum News Alaska
Unocal Corp. said May 5 that gas has been discovered in both the Gula and Gada prospects in the Ganal production sharing contract area offshore East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Together, the company said, the gross unrisked resource potential in the structures is estimated to be in the 2 to 3 trillion cubic foot range, but more drilling will be necessary to assess the full resource potential of these prospects.
The Gula discovery is 35 miles north of the earlier Gendalo discovery. The 1 Gula No. 1 well was drilled to a depth of 16,182 feet in 6,051 feet of water. The well reached total depth in a gas sand and encountered more than 260 feet of net gas pay.
The Gada discovery is 8 miles north of the Gula No. 1 well. The Gada No. 2 well was drilled to a depth of 15,223 feet in 6,224 feet of water and encountered 70 feet of net gas pay.
Unocal said that future drilling will test the deeper section in both the Gula and Gada structures and could increase the resource potential.
Four discoveries in fairway The company said the discoveries “confirm that the well-defined Central Delta Play contains world-class gas resources.”
Unocal has made four discoveries in the fairway, and the company said several large prospects remain undrilled in the play trend. Unocal has also drilled a successful appraisal well on the Gendalo prospect.
