US drilling rig count up by 13 to 1,059

The number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by 13 the week ending May 25 to 1,059, up from 1046 the previous week. A year ago there were 908 active rigs.

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported that 859 rigs drilled for oil (up 15 from previous week) and 198 for natural gas (down two). Two were listed as miscellaneous (no change).

Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas added nine rigs; Alaska, Colorado and Oklahoma each added two; North Dakota and West Virginia each added one rig.

Kansas, Louisiana and New Mexico each dropped one rig.

Arkansas, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wyoming were unchanged.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May of 2016 at 404.
