Alyeska discovers damage to pipeline during investigation dig

by The Associated Press

The Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. discovered damage to the trans-Alaska oil pipeline in an area about 10 miles south of Copper Center.

The damage, discovered May 19, includes gouges on the outside of the pipeline. The damage appears to have been caused by mechanical equipment during construction of the line, Alyeska officials said.

Repairs are under way. They include smoothing the damaged wall surface and installing steel sleeves around two of the five damaged areas. The sleeves will allow restoration of the pipeline to its original maximum allowable operating pressure.
