Nigeria loyal to OPEC, minister says

by The Associated Press

Nigeria won’t withdraw from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, a senior government minister said July 24. Earlier in the week, a newspaper report said the country was considering leaving the cartel. Information Minister Jerry Gana told The Associated Press that isn’t true, but he did say that the West African country has been under increasing pressure from the United States to leave OPEC and increase its exports.

“The United States is trying to put pressure on us. They are luring us to pull out of OPEC. But we know how our interests would be best served and so we are not going to leave OPEC,” Gana told The Associated Press.

Nigeria is the sixth-biggest oil exporter in the world and the fifth largest exporter of oil to the United States.
