Oil Patch Bits: Calista transfers ownership of First Alaskans magazine

Calista Corp. and First Alaskans Institute announced Aug. 19 the transfer of ownership for the premiere Alaska Native-owned magazine, First Alaskans. FAI will assume ownership of the publication later in August.

First Alaskans magazine was the flagship publication of Alaska Newspapers Inc. since it was first published in 2001. The magazine has become known across the globe as the definitive magazine about Alaska Native organizations, tradition and political affairs. At the 2010 Alaska Press Club Awards in April 2011, First Alaskans earned first place for Best Magazine Cover, first and second place for Best Magazine Feature, and first place for Best Magazine Overall Design.

“First Alaskans Institute and Denise Morris are incredible leaders in the Alaska Native community,” said Calista Corp. Senior Vice President Margaret Nelson. “Readers and advertisers can be assured of the continued high quality and solid integrity of First Alaskans magazine in their hands.”

All ANI publications have now been sold. The final publications by ANI weeklies were the week of Aug. 15, and the ANI offices will close Aug. 31.
