PETROLEUM DIRECTORY: Cameron: offering total solutions to complex oilfield demands

Susan Braund

PNA Contributing Writer

In today’s complex world, the lure of a total time-and-trouble-saving solution holds a certain appeal. In the oil and gas arena, Cameron comes close to this mark with its dependable products, expanded product lines and responsive service.

An established market leader in the petroleum and industrial equipment and services industry in more than 100 countries, Cameron is a leading international manufacturer of oil and gas pressure control equipment, including valves, wellheads, controls, chokes, blowout preventers and assembled systems for oil and gas drilling.

Cameron began its Alaska operations in 1957, selling, servicing and repairing wellheads and trees, valves, actuators, chokes and controls for the North Slope as well as the Kenai Gas Field and the Cook Inlet platforms. “By offering cradle-to-grave service on the widest selection of drilling and production equipment available in the industry, the company lives up to its slogan — nobody covers the oilfield better,” says Alaska District Manager Ken Kubiak.

Cameron Alaska has a strong presence in the Alaska oil patch, “primarily because we’re a one-stop shop we can provide equipment upstream and downstream of the well,” says Kubiak. “We have a full complement of products and equipment for the oil and gas market and can provide installation, testing and services on all lines.

“For one independent company recently we were able to provide wellheads, trees, actuators, chokes, pipeline valves and electronic controls. We hooked it up — installed and tested from well through pipeline — and turned it on.”

Kubiak, a 35-year oilfield veteran, has been with the company for 16 years and in the Anchorage office since 1996. “It’s an exciting company to work for because of the wide variety of industry accepted products and quality brands. It’s an opportunity to work with a lot of high quality product lines.”

Quality products

In many segments of the industry, according to corporate promotions, Cameron product brands are recognized as leaders in quality and performance: Cameron, WKM, Demco, McEvoy, Willis, Thornhill Craver, Foster and Orbit.

• Chokes — Cameron Willis markets the industry’s broadest line of chokes.

• Valves — some of the industry’s most trusted brands are among Cameron’s valve product lines. Cameron, WKM, Demco, McEvoy and Foster valves have been performing successfully around the world for more than 65 years. Through Cooper Cameron valves, Cameron offers gate valves, ball valves and butterfly valves for high- medium- and low-pressure applications for the industrial and petrochemical industries.

• Combination products — Cameron wellhead and tree combinations based on integrated Cameron, WKM, and McEvoy design are unbeatable value and function.

Customer Service

To avoid any weekend panics on the North Slope, Cameron maintains a full complement of equipment and repair parts in both Anchorage and on the slope and two technicians are on slope duty at all times. Rentals for most situations are available for customer convenience.

There’s no shortage of expertise on the Cameron crew according to Kubiak: nine employees, all Alaska residents, stack up many years of combined oilfield experience. Cameron’s staff of well-trained service technicians is ready to respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Training: quality, health and safety

The company’s priorities are quality, health and safety and meeting all environmental requirements. Cameron provides extensive and comprehensive training on product usage and safety to both employees and customers. Detailed training manuals with illustrations of each part are essential, according to Kubiak “With six or seven generations of equipment of three sizes, training is a massive undertaking, It’s important for all to understand and use the equipment safely.”

Training programs cover health, safety and environmental compliance as well as extensive product line training. Kubiak reports that the company is very proud of its track record in these areas and continues to strive for excellence in training.

Innovative solutions

“The company is known for its innovative spirit,” reports Kubiak. “The Cameron Research Center, located in Houston, Texas, is the foundation of our commitment to technological leadership and advancement.” The research and development group of highly trained engineers and designers is involved in the development, design, analysis and application of materials and processes. An important part of the R & D process includes product testing; the center houses a complete test lab with the state of the art capabilities for testing pressure, environment, fatigue, tensile strength, gas, flow loop, hot oil, erosion and load. The company’s research keeps it at the forefront of product development and innovative solutions in the oil and gas industry.

Cameron is a division of Cooper Cameron Corp. In addition to the Cameron line of drilling and production equipment, Cooper Cameron is also a leading international manufacturer of centrifugal air compressors, integral and separable gas compressors and turbochargers.
