SeaRiver receives top recognition for safety

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

Exxon Mobil Corp. said June 14 that 21 vessels in its U.S. marine transportation affiliate fleet, SeaRiver Maritime Inc., received Devlin awards from the Chamber of Shipping of America for safety performance.

Named after Jones F. Devlin, a pioneer in marine safety, this award recognizes all self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more without a lost-time injury.

Concurrently, seven SeaRiver vessels received special joint recognition, including highest honors, from the CSA and the Marine Section of the National Safety Council. The Ship Safety Achievement Awards recognize exceptional feats of safety including rescue, distress assistance and acts that contributed to saving a life or a vessel during 2000.

The top honor was presented to SeaRiver, its harbor tug (S/R Bayou State), the tug’s crew, and members of the ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Fire Fighting Team for their participation in a mutual aid response to a barge fire on the Atchafalaya River on Feb. 25, 2000.

SeaRiver, headquartered in Houston, Texas, owns and operates U.S. flag oceangoing tankers, inland towboats, barges and harbor tugs and provides a wide range of marine services including vessel and terminal vetting, chartering and marine requirements planning.
