Resin Coat for Pipeline

Special To The Times: St. Paul, Minn. — The 3M Co. will furnish the corrosion protection material for a major portion of the 800-mile trans-Alaska pipeline system, an official said.

The company will furnish powdered epoxy resin for protection of all the underground portion of the system, said F.A. Blankenbaker, vice president of 3M’s dielectric materials and system’s division.

The resin which will be used will be sprayed onto the heated surface of the pipe where it melts, flow and cures into a very hard, tough and impervious coating. The material has been produced by 3M for the past 10 years for use on oil and gas pipelines and for other corrosion protection applications, the company said.

Surfcote Inc., a Texas-based pipecoating firm, holds the coating contract from Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., which will contract and operate the oil pipeline for owner companies.
