Petroleum News Alaska Staff
Schlumberger Oilfield Services, Northern Air Cargo and Carrs/Safeway, received pollution prevention awards last month from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. DEC Commissioner Michele Brown honored the three businesses with Commissioner’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement in waste reduction, recognizing creative pollution prevention solutions.
Schlumberger Oilfield Services was recognized for the introduction, specifically for the BP Northstar project, of a unique electrically powered logging or data acquisition unit — a device that acquires technical data necessary for locating underground oil, gas and water.
The unit was specifically designed for Alaska’s environment. It produces zero emissions and uses a more efficient power system. Schlumberger has integrated this logging unit with their state-of-the-art Maxis Acquisition System.
Northern Air Cargo was recognized for its Flying Cans program which provides free shipping of aluminum cans from dozens of rural communities to Anchorage, where they are recycled for free with proceeds going back to the communities.
Carrs/Safeway stores were recognized for recycling Christmas trees in Anchorage and Eagle River, more than 15,000 trees this year.
