Exxon’s U.S. shipping firm receives Washington’s exceptional compliance award

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

Exxon Corp. said Sept. 20 that its U.S. marine transportation affiliate, SeaRiver Maritime Inc., has received a Washington state Department of Ecology exceptional compliance award. The award is for SeaRiver’s oil spill prevention plan for its tankers. It is the first time that this award has been granted.

The award recognizes that the SeaRiver plan meets, and in many cases exceeds, the Department of Ecology’s exceptional compliance program standard. Commenting on the award, Gus Elmer, president of SeaRiver, said, “Exceptional compliance with the state of Washington’s rigorous criteria for oil spill prevention plans means that SeaRiver is achieving best-of-industry performance, and is working in harmony with state authorities to achieve operational excellence goals. I am delighted to accept this recognition on behalf of the SeaRiver men and women whose leadership and commitment to safety, environmental protection and continuous improvement are responsible for receiving this outstanding recognition.”

SeaRiver, headquartered in Houston, Texas, owns and operates U.S. flag oceangoing tankers, inland towboats, barges and harbor tugs and provides a wide range of marine services including vessel and terminal vetting, chartering and marine requirements planning.
