ARCO gets EPA award for pollution prevention at Kuparuk

by The Associated Press

Atlantic Richfield Co. has won an award from the Environmental Protection Agency for pollution prevention efforts at its Kuparuk oil field on the North Slope, the federal agency said Nov. 16.

The EPA’s “Evergreen” award is intended to showcase small, medium and large companies in the Pacific Northwest that make environmental stewardship a part of their operations.

EPA Regional Administrator Chuck Clarke said that pollution prevention efforts at Kuparuk have been innovative and cost effective.

In addition to ARCO’s waste management programs, the agency also cited a volunteer employee crew called the Group for Environmental Enhancement at Kuparuk — or GEEK — that emphasizes personal environmental responsibility. The group collects recyclable materials and encourages the use of recyclable products.
