Road expansion approved

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. has received approval from the state to widen the access road between A and D pads to accommodate drilling rig moves out of a congested area in the Prudhoe Bay unit. The area is the main artery for emergency routing response vehicles in the Prudhoe Bay unit and BP told the state that alternate routing for rig moves would facilitate unimpeded response of emergency vehicles.

The 1.4 mile access road is approximately 31 feet wide and it will be expanded to 32 feet wide, increasing the tundra footprint by 0.848 acres.

The access road expansion will require 24,300 cubic yards of gravel obtained from existing reclaimed material stockpiles currently stored at the Kuparuk Deadarm Mine site.

The state issued a determination Aug. 8 that the project was consistent with the Alaska Coastal Management Plan.
