Balash named to Interior post

Joe Balash, currently chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, has been named by President Donald Trump as assistant secretary of the Interior, Land and Mineral Management.

Balash is a former commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and was deputy DNR commissioner from 2010 to 2013. From 2006 to 2010 he served as an advisor to two Alaska governors on natural resource policy, permitting and energy; he served in a variety of positions in the Alaska Legislature from 1998 to 2006, including chief of staff to the president of the Senate.

Balash is married with two children.

His appointment requires confirmation by the Senate.
