U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton has appointed 15 members to the North Slope Science Initiative Science Technical Group.
The North Slope Science Initiative is an inter-agency effort to provide a consistent approach to high-caliber science across the North Slope. The department said Feb. 10 that all the appointees to the Science Technical Group are professionals from agencies, academia, businesses, local governments and the public at large.
The group provides advice and recommendations to the North Slope Science Oversight Group on priority needs for management decisions across the North Slope, including recommendations on inventory, monitoring and research activities that lead to informed land management decisions.
The members are appointed for three-year terms on a staggered basis, with one-third subject to appointment or reappointment each year. All 15 appointments began Jan. 30 and Interior said members will serve only in their professional capacity and will not represent any group, agency or entity with whom they may be affiliated.
Arnold Brower Sr., Dirk Derksen, Douglas Kane, Robert Shuchman and Matthew Sturm were appointed for three-year terms.
Gary Kofinas, Sue Moore, Alvin Ott, Robert Suydam and Kimberly Titus were appointed for two-year terms.
Alison Cooke, John Kelley, Caryn Rea, Dan Reed and Bill Streever were appointed for one-year terms. Oversight group composed of executives The North Slope Science Initiative Oversight Group is comprised of executive leadership from the North Slope Borough, Bureau of Land Management, Arctic Slope Regional Corp., Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minerals Management Service, National Marine Fisheries and National Park Service. The U.S. Arctic Research Commission and the Department of Energy serve as advisors to the Oversight Group.

Ken Taylor was named executive director of the North Slope Science Initiative in January 2005. BLM said at that time that Taylor would work with executive members of federal, state and local governments have North Slope land trust or scientific responsibilities “to ensure sound decisions are made to protect and sustain natural systems as the North Slope is developed.”
Taylor has almost 25 y ears experience in natural resource and energy positions for the State of Alaska and had been acting gas line coordinator for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources before being named to the science initiative post. He has a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University in biological science with emphasis in wildlife management.
