BLM gives go-ahead for Wyoming gas field

Allen Baker

The Bureau of Land Management will allow development of a natural gas field in south-central Wyoming that could involve 385 wells over an area of 233,500 acres. The BLM’s record of decision was announced July 30.

Companies that have sought permission to drill in the Desolation Flats area include Marathon, EOG Resources and Yates Petroleum. The area is near Wamsutter and mostly in Sweetwater County. It is a mix of federal, state and private lands.

Development is expected to start later this year, with an estimated field life of 30 to 50 years and a reserve estimate of 1.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The record of decision is available at http://www.wy.blm.gov/nepa/rfodocs/desflats/desolationflats.htm.
