Department of Energy helps fund CO2 research

Petroleum News Alaska

The Department of Energy has awarded a $5 million grant to BP for a study of carbon dioxide sequestration. The grant, along with $8.8 million from an industry consortium, will be used to study the feasibility of capturing carbon dioxide from a variety of fuel types and combustion sources and storing it in unmineable coal seams and saline aquifers.

Sen. Frank Murkowski announced the grant in March, calling it “an example of a government-private partnership to develop new technology to meet environmental concerns.”

The industry team includes BP, Chevron, Norsk Hydro, Royal Dutch/Shell, Statoil, Suncor Energy and Texaco. The project will be funded for 27 months, beginning in June.

The seven companies said last May that they had joined forces to research and develop advanced carbon dioxide separation and geologic storage technology aimed at reducing greenhouse gas
