GCI ready to launch fiber optic cable to Lower 48

GCI is targeting the first week of February to introduce its new $125 million high speed cable linking Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau to Seattle.

The 2,331-mile fiber optic system was built by Alaska United Fiber System, a wholly owned subsidiary of GCI. Tyco Submarine Systems constructed the undersea portion of the line and completed its work on Jan. 5.

The cable will deliver a total design capacity of 129,024 simultaneous clear channel voice or data circuits at transmission speeds of 10 billion bits per second, eliminating the delays commonly found in satellite connections and enabling GCI to triple its Internet backbone to the Lower 48 states.

More information about GCI can be found at www.gci.com.
