Alberta Indians grab refinery

The 8,500-member Blood Indian tribe of southern Alberta is paying C$50 million for a 6,500 barrel-per-day oil refinery in central Alberta and plans to invest a further C$25 million to upgrade the facility.

With federal approval, the tribe will turn the refinery site into reservation land and make it “exempt from certain taxes,” including a federal excise tax of C$0.10 a liter for the 300 million liters a year of gasoline produced at the refinery.
