Schlumberger, WesternGeco honored with DEC pollution prevention awards

The City of Palmer, Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council, Schlumberger Technology Corp., WesternGeco and ABR Inc. have been honored with Commissioner’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement in preventing pollution, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Michele Brown said Oct. 16.

“Pollution prevention not only protects our environment and public health, it is also good business,” Brown said. “Eliminating, reducing, and reusing what we otherwise throw away can have a big impact on our community, our state, and our country. These organizations and businesses have shown outstanding commitment to ‘doing it right.’”

The City of Palmer was honored for its sanitary wastewater sludge management program. Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Yukon River Watershed through environmental education, river wide assessment, technical assistance, and remediation and reclamation.

ABR Inc. of Fairbanks used $6,000 worth of carbon credits to help Ryan Middle School install solar panels in the school.

WesternGeco designed and built a portable hydrocarbon recovery and disposal system unit to remove hydrocarbons from contaminated snow. Bruce Chulow, the company’s Alaska Geomarket operations manager, said WesternGeco’s mission is to map the world’s basins and image its reservoirs using the best technology in the industry, leaving no footprint. “Our global QHSE policy is to assure that we provide the highest quality products and services; protect the health and safety of our employees, customers, contractors and third parties; and protect the environment in the communities where we work and live.” The onsite process saves $9,000 per month.

Schlumberger Technology Corporation utilizes engine hot glycol circulation systems and the Alaska Materials Exchange program to encourage Alaska businesses to reuse and find alternatives to throwing valuable materials into Alaska’s landfills. “Schlumberger’s Core Value states that ‘Our people, their motivation and dedication to customer service worldwide, in a safe and clean environment, are our main asset.’ We strive to meet perhaps one of the greatest challenges we face today; preserving the quality of the environment where we work, live and play,” said company spokesman Graeme Lawrie.
