ARCO, BP apply to DEC to add leak detection system at Prudhoe

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

ARCO Alaska Inc. and BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. have applied to the Department of Environmental Conservation to add a leak detection system to crude oil transmission pipelines at Prudhoe Bay.

DEC said the leak detection system consists of mass balance line pack compensation and pressure point analysis technologies which would provide continuous pipeline monitoring and rapid detection of pipeline leaks.

Addition of the technologies would require an amendment of the approved oil discharge prevention and contingency plans for both the eastern and western operating areas at Prudhoe.
