Last of three new response tugs arrives in Prince William Sound

by The Associated Press

Crowley Marine Services has delivered the last of three escort tugboats to Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. in Valdez, the companies said early in August.

The Aware follows the Alert and the Attentive, which arrived in February and June, respectively.

The specially designed, 140-foot, 10,000-horsepower vessels serve as tanker escorts in Prince William Sound as part of Alyeska’s Ship Escort Response Vessel System, officials said.

Their function is to prevent oil spills by helping tankers through the Sound. They also will serve as firefighting and response vessels, should the need arise, the companies said.
