Shell eyes upgrade for bitumen pilot

Gary Park

Shell Canada is taking the first steps to turn its Peace River pilot bitumen project in northwestern Alberta into a significant producer.

It is studying the addition of 30,000 barrels per day to the current 11,300 bpd and stretching the life expectancy from 10 years to 30 years. The Peace River pilot was started in 1979 and has just topped the 50-million-barrel mark.Positive drilling results from 2000 and 2001 have prompted Shell Canada to move to engineering and environmental studies, although construction would not commence until 2007.
