Shell awards GTL contract

Petroleum News Alaska

Shell Gas & Power, part of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of companies, has awarded an engineering contract for its first large-scale gas-to-liquids plant.

Shell said Sept. 6 that the contract, worth tens of millions of dollars, covering the definition of the engineering design, was awarded to a joint venture of Kellogg Brown and Root and JGC Corp.

Shell said that the location of this first second-generation GTL plant has yet to be determined, but that an investment decision is expected by the end of 2002. The new facilities will have a capacity of 75,000 barrels a day, requiring a gas intake of around 600 million standard cubic feet a day — roughly equivalent to the gas intake of a large liquefied natural gas train.
