Citizen group files initiative for all-Alaska gas line

Steve Sutherlin

A citizens group filed an initiative for an all-Alaska gas line with the state Division of Elections July 30.

The initiative is entitled, “The All-Alaskan Gasline Initiative, An Act establishing the Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority, to maximize revenues for Alaska and jobs and gas for Alaskans.”

The act is modeled after the Alaska permanent fund act and is similar to Senate Bill 221, authored by Sen. Robin Taylor, said Scott Heyworth, who filed the initiative on behalf of Citizens for the All-Alaska Gas Pipeline Initiative. The act would create an authority to facilitate development of the project.

The group must gather 28,700 signatures prior to the first day of the legislative session to get the initiative on the ballot, Heyworth said.

The goal of the authority is to have the Alaska gas line in full production by 2007, the initiative said.
