Charlotte Brower certified as NSB mayor

Charlotte Brower is the new North Slope Borough mayor.

The Anchorage Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/rPaC25) Brower took office Nov. 15 in Barrow after absentee and questioned ballots were counted. The final tally was 1,022-960 in Brower’s favor over former five-time Mayor George Ahmoagak.

He’s contesting the election results, which were certified by the borough assembly. Clerk Jeannie Brower says a recount will be conducted the week ending Nov. 18.

A few weeks before the election, Ahmoagak’s wife, Maggie, was indicted by a federal grand jury, accused of stealing about $475,000 from the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission.
