On July 26 the number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in the U.S. was down eight from the previous week to 946.

A year ago, the count was 1,048 active rigs.

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported that 776 rigs targeted oil (down three from the previous week) and 169 targeted natural gas (down five). One miscellaneous rig was active (unchanged).

The company said 67 of the U.S. holes were directional, 823 were horizontal and 56 were vertical.

Wyoming was up four rigs from the previous week, New Mexico was up two and California, Colorado and Utah were each up one rig.

Rig counts in Pennsylvania and Texas were unchanged from the previous week. Texas, with 454 rigs, has the most active rigs in the country.

Alaska and West Virginia were each down by one rig; Ohio and Oklahoma were each down by two.

Louisiana was down by four rigs and North Dakota was down by eight.

Baker Hughes shows Alaska with nine rigs active, up three from a year ago.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May 2016 at 404.
