Linc reports early Umiat results

The first exploration well drilled in the Umiat area in decades has encountered 100 feet of net oil pay in the Lower Grandstand formation, according to operator Linc Energy Ltd.

The Australian independent is currently casing the Umiat No. 18 well and plans to continue drilling down to a deeper natural gas target, the company said on March 25.

In addition to encountering oil-bearing sands, Linc collected 300 feet of core.

Umiat No. 18 is one of two wells Linc plans to drill at the oil field straddling the boundary of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska in the foothills of the Brooks Range.

After flow testing Umiat No. 18, Linc plans to drill Umiat No. 23H, a horizontal well near Umiat No. 18 designed to give the company a “side-by-side” comparison.

The U.S. Navy drilled 12 wells at Umiat between 1946 and 1979.
