Arctic Oil & Gas Directory: Unique Machine
Unique Machine, a Sumitomo Corporation of America subsidiary, was founded in 1973 and has emerged as the largest machine shop in the state of Alaska. In 2007, the company became the first Alaska manufacturer to be both API Spec Q1 and ISO 9001 — 2000 quality management certified for the manufacture of oilfield equipment and the proprietary threading of casing and tubing.
Richard McMillan Richard McMillan began his career with Unique Machine in an entry level position, learning everything he could along the way. After 18 years, he still takes pride when a part he has manufactured comes off the line the way it was intended. Promoted this year to the Quality Department, McMillan hopes to help train the next generation of machinists to hold high standards for their own product.
Bryan Niess Bryan Niess moved to Alaska to fulfill his life-time dream of living in the last frontier. He joined the Unique Machine team three years ago and has previous experience in his specialty, working with CNC lathes.
Proudly born the year Alaska became a state, Niess lives in Anchorage with his wife and enjoys hunting and fishing, especially for saltwater fish.
Paul Hewlett Paul Hewlett began his career with Unique Machine as a pipe handler, moving into his current position after a year. He is on the HE safety committee and performs the weekly safety walk-through of Unique’s facility.
Nicknamed the “super user” at work, Hewlett is the go-to guy for computer questions. He is an avid Alaska Aces fan and loves pizza.
