Petroleum News

The secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior has established the North Slope Science Initiative Science Technical Group and the Bureau of Land Management is seeking nominations.

There are up to 15 science advisory positions in the following disciplines: expertise in North Slope traditional and local knowledge; landscape ecology; petroleum engineering; civil engineering; petroleum geology; botany; hydrology; limnology; habitat biology; wildlife biology; marine ecology; biometrics; sociology; cultural anthropology; economics; ornithology; oceanography; fisheries biology; and climatology.

The Science Technical Group will provide advice and recommendations to the North Slope Science Oversight Group on priority needs for management decisions across the North Slope of Alaska. BLM said these priority needs may include recommendations on inventory, monitoring and research activities that lead to informed land management decisions.

The North Slope Science Oversight Group consists of the Alaska regional directors of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minerals Management Service, National Park Service, Geological Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, the state director of BLM, Alaska commissioners of the departments of Natural Resources and Fish and Game, the mayor of the North Slope Borough and the president of the Arctic Slope Regional Corp.

Taylor designated federal officer for science technology

Terms for the Science Technical Group are from one to three years and members may be reappointed for consecutive terms. There is no salary, but members are reimbursed for travel expenses, BLM said.

The executive director for the North Slope Science Initiative, Ken Taylor, is the designated federal officer for the Science Technology Group.

Nomination packets are available from Taylor by calling (907) 271-3131 or at www.northslope.org. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 27; final selection will be by the secretary of the interior, with appointments effective March 1, 2006.
