Trenching tests proposed for gas pipeline

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

The North Slope producers — BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc., ExxonMobil Production Co. and Phillips Alaska Inc. —have begun permitting pipeline trenching trials for potential construction of a gas pipeline to bring North Slope gas to market.

Four sites will be used to conduct tests of trenching equipment: two locations on the North Slope in the vicinity of the Deadhorse Airport and at the Put-23 gravel mine; and two locations off the Elliott Highway outside of the coastal zone about 40 miles north of Fairbanks.

Ice pads will be used in areas where gravel pads are not present.

The trenching trials will evaluate a range of excavation procedures using two different trenching machines.

The North Slope trials are planned for Feb. 1 through mid-March; trials at the Elliott Highway sites will end in mid-April.

Areas disturbed by the trenching test and associated activities will be restored following breakup in spring 2002.
