US drilling rig count up by 7 to 1,739

The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by seven the week ending Feb. 4 to 1,739.

Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. reported that 911 rigs were exploring for gas and 818 for oil. Ten were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago, the count was 1,335.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained 10 rigs, New Mexico gained three and Alaska, Louisiana and Pennsylvania each were up one.

North Dakota declined by six, California by two and Oklahoma one. Arkansas, Colorado, West Virginia and Wyoming all were unchanged.

The rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981, the height of the oil boom. The record low of 488 was in 1999.
