Archive to process Exxon Valdez records

The Alaska State Archives will use a $109,000 grant to preserve documents related to the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

The Juneau Empire reports the grant is from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

It will be a two-year project for the state archive to process records related both to the spill and subsequent litigation.

The staff will appraise 3,300 boxes of records and process another 400 to 600 boxes determined to have permanent historical value.

State Archivist Dean Dawson says they will begin the project in October.

The tanker Exxon Valdez on March 23, 1989, hit Bligh Reef and spilled nearly 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound.
