Barbados suspends oil drilling

The Associated Press

Low market prices have prompted Barbados to suspend drilling of oil wells and to lay off 43 workers with the Barbados National Oil Co.

BNOC General Manager Ron Hewitt said March 7 that under a year-old drilling program, 20 new wells had been sunk at a cost of $13 million. Work on 30 more planned wells won’t begin for at least a year, Hewitt said.

Production from the new wells is about 800 barrels per day, a third of Barbados’ total production of 2,400 barrels per day. The Caribbean nation consumes about 4,000 barrels of oil a day.
