Gas-Pro interested in Anadarko and ARCO’s 2-D seismic from North Fork

A 34th plan of development for unit approved by state; company will pursue possibility of marketing natural gas in Homer

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

Phillip Lafleur, general manager of Gas-Pro Alaska LLC, told the state earlier this year that the company is working on gaining access to seismic data shot by Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and ARCO Alaska Inc. across the North Fork unit gas field on the lower Kenai Peninsula in 1997.

Gas-Pro acquired Unocal’s interest in the unit in 1996 and is now the unit operator. The Bureau of Land Management has approved transfer of Marathon Oil Co.’s interest in the North Fork unit to Gas-Pro, Lafleur said, and the company is awaiting state of Alaska approval of lease assignments.

A 34th plan of development for the North Fork unit has been approved, valid June 20, 1999, through June 19, 2000. The company said in that plan that it will pursue the possibility of a natural gas market developing in the Homer area.

Back-up well for Enstar

Enstar Natural Gas Co. received the certificate to serve the Homer area with natural gas in December 1997. Gas-Pro said it has had discussions with Enstar about the necessity of a back-up well and is discussing how to meet that concern with other North Fork working interest owners.

There are two state leases at North Fork. In one lease, ARCO Alaska has a 50 percent working interest and Gas-Pro has 50 percent. In the other lease, Gas-Pro has a 73.6 percent working interest and is picking up Marathon’s 13.7 working interest; ARCO Alaska has a 12.7 percent working interest in the second lease.

Gas-Pro said it will incorporate new seismic with existing well data in a development plan.

More wells possible

“These exploration efforts may lead to additional wells being drilled on the North Fork unit or in the immediate vicinity and, if successful, further development of the unit,” the company said.

Standard Oil Co. of California drilled the discovery well at North Fork in 1965. The undefined gas pool at the field is in the Tyonek formation at about 7,200 feet. The discovery well found 40 feet of producing formation. There is currently no production from the North Fork field, which has been shut in since 1965.
