PETROLEUM DIRECTORY: North Slope Telecom gets Pogo contract

Allen Baker

North Slope Telecom Inc. has been awarded a contract to install a microwave communications system linking the Pogo mine in northeastern Alaska to Delta Junction, the telecommunications company announced Sept. 3. North Slope, based in Anchorage, didn’t disclose the terms of the deal with Teck-Pogo Inc.

The new communication link will span the 35 miles from the Pogo mine to Delta, with a remote mountaintop repeater in between. The repeater site will have solar panels and a wind turbine to provide power.

Once the system is finished, the mine will have access to public telephone switching with a minimum of problems. The mine is now served with a satellite system.
