Rig count up by 6 in United States, down by 8 in Canada

The North American rig count fell by two during the week ending Aug. 1, with Canada down by eight and the United States up by six rigs from the previous week, according to rig monitor Baker Hughes.

In the United States, there were a total of 1,097 rigs working compared to 1,091 the previous week and 848 for the same period last year. Land rigs were up by two to 969 versus the previous week and up by 257 compared to the year-ago period. Rigs at work in the Gulf of Mexico rose by three to 107 compared to the previous week but were still down by four versus the year-ago period. Inland water rigs increased by one to 17 versus the previous week but were down by three compared to the same period last year.

In Canada, there were 416 rigs at work during the week ending Aug. 1 compared to 424 the previous week and 257 a year earlier, according to Baker Hughes.

For all rigs working in North America during the week, 937 were dedicated to natural gas and 156 to oil, while four were assigned to miscellaneous duties. Among the leading producing states, Texas added four rigs during the week for a total of 475, Wyoming added four rigs for a total of 65, Oklahoma added one rig for a total of 140 and New Mexico added one rig for a total of 61. Alaska remained unchanged with eight rigs and California was unchanged with 22 rigs. Louisiana’s rig count fell by one to 158.
