DEC calls oil spill drill

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation called an unannounced oil spill drill Feb. 27 in Valdez. Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. said the scenario was a major tanker accident, requiring a full ramp-up and complete deployment of the incident command system organization.

The Valdez emergency operations center was activated with phones, computers, fax machines, video and printers brought on-line. Alyeska said that in less than two hours, more than 100 people responded to the all-day tabletop drill.

A similar number of people within the trans-Alaska pipeline system organizations also provided assistance. The purpose of such drills is to test response and identify areas that may require improvement.
