Our Arctic Neighbors: Russia expands reach of Arctic mapping

Russia will conduct geological mapping in a number of new sites in the Arctic next year, the Federal Agency of Subsoil Resources, Rosnedra, announced in early August. The government plans to spend 2.6 billion rubles ($111 million) on the program on the country’s continental shelf, an increase of 160 percent from this year.

A total of 34 areas will be mapped in the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea and the Pechora Sea. Russia will also study the waters west of the Spitsbergen archipelago, an area where sovereignty is disputed with Norway.
