Phillips permitting Moquawkie gas pipeline

Kristen Nelson

Phillips Alaska Inc. is permitting a 6 mile natural gas pipeline from the Lone Creek No. 1 well at Moquawkie on the west side of Cook Inlet to Marathon Oil Co.’s Beluga pipeline about 1 mile north of the Chuitna River.

The project is a buried natural gas gathering line and will be 3.5 inches to 6 inches in diameter.

The proposed construction schedule calls for completion by the end of the year.

The well was drilled in 1998 by Anadarko Petroleum Corp., then partner with ARCO Alaska Inc. in the prospect, which is on Tyonek surface land some 7 miles north of the village.

Anadarko said in October 1998 that the well tested 10.6 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from 53 feet of perforations at approximately 2,400 feet. “This represents one of the best shallow gas tests in the vicinity for a reservoir of this age and type,” the company said. Several other gas zones, approximately 180 feet, were encountered but not initially tested.

Lone Creek is the first well operated by Anadarko in Alaska and is on lands leased from Cook Inlet Region Inc.

ARCO Alaska (now part of Phillips Alaska) is operating the production phase of the project. Phillips already operates the Beluga River gas field northeast of Moquawkie.
