Pretty Creek gas production suspended

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

Unocal has received permission from the state to suspend production and operations for the Pretty Creek unit on the west side of Cook Inlet.

Unocal told the state in January that gas production from the 2 Pretty Creek Unit well had ceased due to sand accumulation in the wellbore. Attempts to bail the sand out of the wellbore and reestablish production have been unsuccessful. There is only one producing well in the unit.

Unocal told the state that a coiled tubing unit was not likely to be effective and that the company expected a workover rig would be necessary to repair the well. There are, however, no drilling or workover rigs available on the west side of Cook Inlet. Unocal told the state that it will continue efforts to acquire a rig to repair the well. If a rig is obtained, Unocal will continue operations by repairing the well.

Suspension of production for the Pretty Creek unit has been approved through Aug. 25.
