U.S. gains 11 drilling rigs, Canada down 26 in weekly drilling survey

The number of rotary drilling rigs operating in the United States and Canada during the week ending Aug. 26 totaled 1,953, down 15 rigs from the previous week but up 435 rigs compared to the same weekly period last year, according to rig monitor Baker Hughes.

Canada’s rig count fell by 26 compared to the previous week for a total of 509 rigs, but was up by 230 rigs compared to the year-ago period.

The number of drilling rigs operating in the United States during the recent week stood at 1,444, a net increase of 11 rigs from the previous week and an increase of 205 rigs from the same period last year. Compared to the prior week only, land rigs increased by 13 to 1,319 rigs, while inland water rigs increased by one to 25 rigs. However, the number of offshore rigs operating in the United States decreased by three for a total of 100 rigs.

Of U.S. rigs, 1,200 drilling for gas

Of the total number of rigs operating in the United States during the recent week, 1,200 were drilling for natural gas and 220 for oil, while four rigs were being used for miscellaneous purposes. Of the total, 891 were vertical wells, 360 directional wells, and 193 horizontal wells. Among the leading U.S. producing states, Wyoming picked up four rigs vs. the previous week for a total of 84 rigs. Colorado gained two rigs for a total 77 rigs. Texas gained one rig for a total of 628 rigs. Oklahoma picked up one rig for a total of 160 rigs. California picked up one rig for a total of 77 rigs. Alaska gained one rig for a total of 10 rigs. Louisiana’s count slipped by two for a total of 199 rigs and New Mexico was unchanged with 81 rigs.
