US drilling rig count gains three to 793

Baker Hughes reports the number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in the U.S. the week ending March 6 was up by three from the previous week to 793 but down by 234 from 1,027 a year ago.

In its weekly rig count the Houston oilfield services company said 682 rigs targeted oil, up by four from the previous week but down by 152 from a year ago, while 109 targeted natural gas, down by one from the previous week and down 84 from a year ago. There were two miscellaneous rigs active, unchanged from the previous week and up by two from a year ago.

The company said 51 of the holes were directional, 708 were horizontal and 34 were vertical.

Louisiana and Texas, the state with the most active rigs at 404, were each up by three rigs from the previous week.

New Mexico and Utah were each up by one rig.

Rig counts were unchanged from the previous week in Alaska, Colorado, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

California, North Dakota and West Virginia were each down by one rig.

Oklahoma and Wyoming were each down by two rigs from the previous week.

Baker Hughes shows Alaska with 10 rigs active for the week ending March 6, up three from a year ago.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May 2016 at 404.

International count up by 7

Baker Hughes said March 6 that the international rig count for February, which excludes North America, stood at 1,085, up seven from January and up 58 from 1,027 in February 2019. Of those international rigs, the February offshore count was 245, unchanged from January and down five from 250 counted in February 2019.

The U.S. rig count averaged 791 in February, unchanged from January, but down 258 from 1,049 in February 2019. The Canadian rig count averaged 249 in February, up 45 from 204 in January and up 19 from 120 in February 2019.

Worldwide, which includes North America, the count for February was 2,125, up 52 from 2,073 in January, but down 181 from 2,306 in February 2019.
