Canada picks up 60 rigs; U.S. gains 17

The number of rotary drilling rigs operating in the United States and Canada during the week ending Aug. 5 was a combined 1,700, an increase of 77 rigs from the previous week and an increase of 208 rigs from the same period last year, according to rig monitor Baker Hughes.

The Canadian rig count for the recent week was 432, up 60 rigs compared to the prior week and up 54 rigs vs. the year-ago period.

The number of rigs operating in the United States during the recent week totaled 1,268, up 17 rigs from the previous week and up 154 rigs from the same period last year. Compared to the previous week only, land rigs increased by 13 to 1,149 rigs, while offshore rigs increased by three to 91 rigs and inland water rigs increased by one to 23 rigs.

Majority of rigs drilling for gas

Of the total number of rigs operating in the United States during the recent week, 1,077 were drilling for natural gas and 190 for oil, while one was being used for miscellaneous purposes. Of the total, 797 were vertical wells, 339 directional wells and 132 horizontal wells.

Among the leading U.S. producing states during the recent week, New Mexico gained nine rigs for a total of 72 rigs. Oklahoma picked up eight rigs for a total of 168 rigs. Louisiana gained three rigs for a total of 178 rigs. Wyoming gained two rigs for a total of 82 rigs. And Alaska gained one rig for a total of 11 rigs. The number of rigs in Texas dropped by five to 524. California was unchanged with 26 rigs.
