Oil Patch Insider: Kara Sea is ice free

The Barents Observer has reported that satellite images indicate that the Kara Sea, the section of the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia and east of the Barents Sea, was completely free of ice in mid-February. Areas of the Arctic Ocean west of Svalbard are also ice free, the Barents Observer said.

While central Europe and Russia are experiencing exceptionally cold weather, the weather has been unusually warm in the high Arctic, with rain and melting snow on Svalbard. The Kara Sea has never before been known to be free of ice in February, the Barents Observer said.
