1999 EIS allows for multiple NPR-A lease sales

Kristen Nelson

The 1999 environmental impact study for the northeast corner of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska allows for multiple lease sales, as long as they are within the boundaries established by that study. (See related news item on Page B1.)

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management does leasing in the NPR-A, and BLM spokesman Edward Bovy told PNA that the agency would follow same procedures as for last sale, beginning with a call for expressions of interest and identification of potential parcels for inclusion in the lease sales.

Bovy said there are no NPR-A lease sales planned for this year, but the Interior Department’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year contains funds to prepare for an additional sale in 2003. (see adjacent Interior budget story).
