Oil spill found at Flint Hills refinery

About 1,800 gallons of crude oil spilled at the Flint Hills Resources refinery at North Pole, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said.

A Flint Hills operator conducting a routine inspection discovered the spill on the afternoon of Feb. 26, and it was reported to DEC on Feb. 28, the agency said.

The oil released into the secondary containment of Tank 103, but it didn’t come from the tank. “The exact cause of the spill is unknown at this time,” said a DEC situation report issued March 1. “A suspected sump system valve is being examined to determine if crude oil back flowed into the containment area from the system piping. The suspected valve was closed when the incident occurred.”
