PETROLEUM DIRECTORY: ArrowHealth Corporation: Drug testing made smooth and simple

Susan Braund

PNA Contributing Writer

The target is excellence and ArrowHealth Corp.'s quiver is bursting with precision arrows — cutting edge testing technologies, occupational health solutions and dedicated customer service.

ArrowHealth is a woman-owned Alaska business providing local and centralized services ranging from drug and alcohol screening, clinical trials, DNA paternity testing, health risk assessments and insurance examination solutions.

“We service the local community, national contracts, and government agencies with customized, quality solutions,” says Health Services Director Lea Counts, who is business partner with Insurance Services Director A.J. Clark. “As a service provider of occupational health and substance abuse testing, our commitment to clients runs deep — we treat individuals with professionalism, sensitivity and respect every step of the way.”

ArrowHealth is the Alaska office of Examination Management Services Inc., a national medical information services provider offering a broad range of risk management services to the insurance and business communities. Founded in 1974, Examination Management Services employs more than 6,000 health professionals nationwide and provides service to more than 15,000 cities and towns and remote area across the country. ArrowHealth draws on the strengths of its corporate partner to offer an expansive array of services and solutions.

The Counts-Clark team worked for the previous owner for three years before taking over the business in September 2001. Since then, the new owners have been busy reorganizing the enterprise. “There have been so many positive changes, it’s hard to list them all. We’ve moved twice, hired new personnel and added several new technologies,” reports Counts. “We go the extra mile, offering our clients the best possible service. We want every customer to have a positive experience.”

Counts brings 13 years of business management and customer service experience and a bachelor of science degree in electronic business to the company. As health services director, she oversees drug and alcohol testing programs for federally mandated industries, private sector companies, and individuals. She has extensive regulatory and technical training, such as Designated Employer Representative certification training, which meets or exceeds U.S. Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing program requirements.

Clark oversees and supervises the Alaska territory for insurance services and manages 17 examination personnel statewide. In addition to being a certified paramedical examiner, Clark is also a licensed clinical laboratory scientist with 30 years experience in clinical laboratory management. Clark’s extensive clinical background lends support to Counts and the company’s health services division.

Drug and alcohol testing

Based on client needs and federal requirements, ArrowHealth can help create and implement a legally defensible drug and alcohol testing program within an organization. “Whether your company requires mobile or in-office services, we can help you establish the correct policies and guidelines essential for an effective testing program,” says Counts. “From program management to random selection, we can fully manage the testing programs of busy employers that want to concentrate on their own operations.”

ArrowHealth's testing and support services are customized to meet specific client needs — small and large companies, treatment facilities, parents and individuals. The firm offers several testing options with the flexibility of mobile or in-office testing, and 24/7 emergency capabilities. In addition, the company can bundle services and coordinate all the steps for smooth program implementation.

ArrowHealth only utilizes laboratories certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and rapid testing devices cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. Certified Medical Review Officer services are utilized for fast and accurate review of test results for Department of Transportation and non-Department of Transportation regulated companies.

Goals for the Health Services Division in 2003 include national accreditation for drug and alcohol testing program administrators through the Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association and C-SAPA certification through the Substance Abuse Program Administrators Association.

Services for DOT-regulated testing

“Industries regulated by the Department of Transportation may be audited at some point during operation,” says Counts. “Our procedures and methodologies are fully compliant with DOT regulations. If this situation does arise, we can guide our clients successfully through this sensitive process.”

ArrowHealth’s certified technicians perform all procedures in compliance with Department of Transportation guidelines, the gold standard in the drug and alcohol testing industry. In addition, to ensure that they stay informed of industry and regulatory changes, the company maintains membership in the Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association and Substance Abuse Program Administrators Association.

Services for non regulated drug and alcohol testing

“Not all rapid drug testing technology is equal,” says Counts. “We advise employers to make certain they choose a testing company that utilizes rapid testing devices approved by the Food and Drug Administration. All ArrowHealth’s rapid testing solutions for employers are FDA approved.”

One of the company’s newest rapid testing technologies is the eScreen system. This testing system creates an electronic, web-enabled preferred network for businesses seeking easier access to data, faster test results and paperless transactions. eScreen revolutionizes employment drug testing with an automated screening system that requires no human interpretation, while providing key services such as data management, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration certified laboratory confirmation, certified medical review officer services and electronic reporting. “With this system, employers receive test results in 30 minutes or less for all screened negatives — that is a truly useful hiring tool,” says Counts.”

ArrowHealth is an experienced testing company. “Whether your company is required to establish a testing program, or a safer and more productive environment is your goal, let us guide you through the process,” says Counts.
