Chenault: Early session end possible

House Speaker Mike Chenault says lawmakers could still meet their goal of finishing their work before Easter “if things go perfect.”

He says things can move faster when the Legislature implements the 24-hour rule, when hearings can be noticed the day before. But he also said finishing early during a 90-day session was an optimistic goal.

Session is scheduled to end on Easter, April 20. Legislative leaders have said they would like to complete their work by Good Friday, April 18, if possible.

Legislative attorney Alpheus Bullard, in a memo to Sen. Hollis French, said if the session lasts beyond 90 days, the initiatives slated to appear on the primary ballot will get bumped to the next statewide election.

Bullard said a special session wouldn’t affect placement of the initiatives.
