Hansen sidetrack at Cosmopolitan will be longer

Petroleum News Staff

ConocoPhillips Alaska is drilling at its Cosmopolitan prospect north of Anchor River, Rick Mott, vice president, exploration and land, told the Alaska Support Industry Alliance April 17.

The well, a sidetrack, was permitted in mid-February from the company’s onshore surface location in section 20, township 4 south, range 15 west, Seward Meridian, to a bottomhole location in section 32, T3S-R15W, SM.

Mott said Cosmopolitan “is an offshore prospect being drilled from onshore using extended reach technology” and “the largest and most powerful drilling rig in Alaska.”

Last year’s well, the Hansen 1, “went down about a mile and a half and then out underneath the inlet about three miles,” Mott said.

That well was a “world-class drilling accomplishment,” he said.

This year’s sidetrack, he said, “will go even further out underneath the inlet.”

Alaska SPE awards $24,500 in scholarships

The Alaska Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers awarded $24,500 in scholarships in April. The organization said this was the largest sum ever awarded by the Alaska Section in a single year, almost doubling $13,500 awarded in 2001.

Two, four-year, $2,500-a-year scholarships were awarded to students pursuing petroleum engineering degrees: Keith Wolfe of Seward High School, entering the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a freshman, year one of four, and Dallas Sundquist, University of Alaska Anchorage sophomore, renewal for year two of four.

Three one-time $1,500 scholarships were awarded to University of Alaska Fairbanks petroleum engineering students: Seth Brown, a junior; Robert Mielke, a senior; and Philip Tsunemori, a senior.

Four one-time $1,500 scholarships were awarded to students planning to pursue engineering degrees beginning this fall: Heather Frenier of Robert Service High School, entering the Colorado School of Mines; John Hanus of Robert Service High School, entering Washington State University; Megan Kimmet, Robert Service High School, entering University of Notre Dame; and Samir Patil, West Valley High School, entering University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The society said an additional seven one-time $1,000 scholarships and four one-time $500 scholarships were awarded, based on outstanding qualifications of the applicants, strong Alaska oil community support for the scholarship program and available financial resources.

The $1,000 scholarship recipients were Nathan Ayotte, Anca Bertus, Kristen Gantt, Gabriel Hayden, Hans Borchardt, Jordan Perry and Jared Szijkowaski.

The $500 scholarship recipients were Sarah Beetch, Chrystal Carlson, Brett Johnson and Susan Underbakke.

Schlumberger creates technology center in U.K.

Schlumberger Oilfield Services said in mid-April that it is creating the Schlumberger Global Drilling Technology Center in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom “to better meet customers’ needs for advanced drilling technology.”

“This expansion will allow synergies in product development as a result of close cooperation with the drilling group at Schlumberger Cambridge Research,” said Dylan Davies, manager, Schlumberger Stonehouse center.

Davies said the move “ensures that ideas are moved rapidly from research to product development and into the field.”

Schlumberger is remodeling its current facility to accommodate the expanded operations and relocation of Houston staff. There are 90 staff at the center now; that will increase to some 150 by year end.

In addition its Fairbanks’ headquarters, Air Logistics maintains offices in Deadhorse, Valdez and Anchorage.

Chuck Becker touts Asia Now Express

Thinking about exporting to Australia, Indonesia, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan or the Philippines?

The U.S. Commercial Service, through some 75 Export Assistance Centers, can help.

Chuck Becker of the Alaska Export Assistance Center (907-271-6237) suggests companies try out the new “Asia Now Express” service. If export information is readily available, there is no charge. Becker is anxious to help Alaska businesses translate their ideas into real export successes.

Here’s how it works: The Export Assistance Center sends your question to the appropriate embassy or consulate in, say, New Zealand. If it takes less than an hour to prepare a response, you pay nothing. If more research is required, you get a price quote.

Typical off-the-shelf information includes duty and VAT tax rates; companies in the target market; agents, distributors and other potential business contact lists; general standards for various products; travel and health advisories.
